FAMU Alumnus Cordell Hardy lead R&D chemical engineer for 3M's Personal Safety Division

Cordell M. Hardy, FAMU, B.S., Chemical Engineering, 1998.

FAMU alumnus Cordell M. Hardy, joined 3M is 2003 after completing a Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota. He graduated with a B.S. in chemical engineering from Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering.

"Improving our safety" is the guiding philosophy at the center of Cordell Hardy's work as a technical manager in 3M's Body Protection Solutions business in their Personal Safety Division.

"We provide products to help people stay safe while they work, including personal respirators, helmets, body harnesses and other equipment," said Hardy.

His first role at 3M involved product development for 3M's Consumer business. Since then, he has held management roles of increasing responsibility in product development and product stewardship prior to his current role.

Hardy continued, "As a technical manager, I work with experts in a range of science and engineering disciplines. I must communicate effectively with them as well as with my management team. One of the most important parts of my job is estimating and forecasting – taking the information we have in hand today, and making a reasonably accurate prediction about what will happen in the future."

While a project developer for 3M's Consumer and Office business, Hardy guided the development of various adhesives, tapes and home cleaning products. From Scotch-lite reflective materials that improve the visibility of those who wear them to industrial cleaning products for cleaner, safer facilities, Hardy's research team has taken the lead in supporting technology commercialization programs. Hardy's research is evident in the broad range of 3M products impacting our daily lives especially in the areas of particulate and chemical filtration materials, protective and optical coating, abrasives and sustainable materials.

"We have the great privilege of taking the world's largest collection of technologies and using them to make people safer at work all around the world. From avoiding fall injuries and lung damage to protecting eyes, ears, skin, hands and feet, we do not have to look far to see the benefit of the work we do," remarked Hardy.

Hardy has invented several consumer products for 3M that have already been granted patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has filed for patent protection for several pending product applications. A list of recent patents can be found here:

Having experienced the benefits of a STEM-focused education, Hardy is passionate about helping others discover early the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math in the classroom. Hardy has been recognized as a STEM Role Model by Jason Learning, an online learning resource devoted to "Education through Exploration."
